Missive #468

The ordeals faced by a group of pioneers journeying from Illinois to California in 1846. Jacob and George Donner knew that the trip from Illinois to California would be long and difficult, but they had read a bout a newly discovered shortcut that would make the trip somewhat easier. Even so, the going was rough. This is a short book that tells the story of the Donner Party which as been told at great length by other authors. A good quick read. The group had to contend with sickness, quick tempers, and hostile bands of Indians. But, they were determined to reach their destination by winter. At the end of October, they found themselves stranded on the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada with little food or supplies. The snowy winter had already begun, and help was nowhere to be found. — Book promo @ goodreads. com

Yesterday I had breakfast at the Bisbee Breakfast Club which is in Lowell a section of Bisbee. Then went to Bisbee Computer in South Bisbee near the laundromat I have used. The discussion there led to the owner wanting to sell me a laptop for less than $200 with Mint Linux distro installed. Told me it would be ready by noon. By 1:30 he said he couldn’t get Mint to install and declared the laptop a brick. I left with the promise he would have what I wanted when I stopped on my way back from VA appointments on 3 April.

I had left the computer shop for my dental appointment cleaning in Naco which was just routine.
