Missive #571

The War in the Northwest is the third volume of Theodore Roosevelt’s series The Winning of the West, which details the exploration and settlement of the United States from the Alleghenies to the Pacific. This volume specifically covers events such as the Moravian Massacre (1779–1782),I think this book promo overstates the scope of Roosevelt’s West. He hasn’t crossed the Mississippi yet and has a lot of ground to cover in the next three volumes. From the title of those next volumes I don’t think he will cross the Mississippi and his West was between the Alleghenies and the Mississippi. the administration of conquered French settlements, the founding of the Cumberland Settlement by Robertson, and key battles like King’s Mountain in 1780. Roosevelt frames these events as part of a broader narrative in which backwoodsmen like Daniel Boone and Simon Kenton, along with pioneer settlers, secured American claims to western lands through both conflict and diplomacy.

Yesterday I left Reserve and drove to Silver City, NM where I had planned on stopping at a restaurant that had provided good Mexican breakfasts maybe 10 years ago. It is no longer there so I has going to go on and stop at another one in Bayard where I had breakfasted before. But just a few miles east of Silver City the heat gage pegged in the red zone and the Engine Service light came on. I pulled over and shut down with steam billowing from under the hood. The engine coolant tank was very hot so I walked circles around Desperado until it cooled down and was then going to drive back to Silver City and have someone check for the problem. I drove about a mile and the same thing happened so I shut it down on the side of the road and stood behind Desperado looking helpless until finally flagging down a New Mexico State Patrol car. The patrolman called for a tow and soon one came from G & G Towing and Repair.

They got me back to their shop and very quickly found the problem. The engine was installed with a hose to the heater pressed over its connection, the clamp that was to hold it in place was not clamped down to hold it in place. It finally reached the point where the hose came off and sprayed coolant all over the engine compartment and emptied the coolant tank. Thus the heat gage got pegged hot and the Engine Service light coming on. They fixed that, filled the coolant tank and ran the engine at idle for a long time to get it hot to properly fill the coolant tank. I was then back on the road about three hours later and with a checking account seriously depleted.

It probably does not need to be said but I have sent an email to Catron Garage in Reserve explaining what happened and saying that I was not a happy camper.

The route yesterday was 192 miles with about 425 miles of the 500 engine break in done. I’ll have them all completed by the time I get to my winter camp . The route: NM12, US180, NM11 & NM9.

This morning I got up on AZ time although I was still in NM with Day Light Savings. It had been a lot of years since I last drove NM 9 from Columbus to NM80 but the best I remember it the road surface has not improved any. It is also a lonely road with about half of the vehicles that I saw being Border Patrol and not a lot of them. Stopped at the Rodeo Grocery and Cafe and had breakfast which again was after many years of driving by when they were not open. The drive today was slow on NM9 but as fast as I wanted to push the new engine. When I got on AZ80 I had reached the 500 mile break in so kicked it up to 60 mph for 3-4 five mile intervals. I was running like a champ all day no signs of overheating. However, that was true yesterday as well until suddenly it happened. Only 165 miles and the route today: NM9, NM80, AZ80, US191 & Double Adobe Rd.

I got a reply from the fellow at Catron Garage in Reserve. He said he would reimburse me for the install screw up. So, what we have agreed for now is that he will give me a credit for that reimbursement plus the engine core refund that is still coming sometime in the future. The credit will then be applied to the cost of a new set of tires to be purchased by him and installed next June. This was my offer since I’m out of pocket and it is all sunk cost plus I’m waiting for the core refund anyway to have enough to buy the tires now.

  1. Yes, in looking at the situation in hind sight it happened at the best place. There were plenty of other locations that would have been far worse and would have cost a whole LOT more in towing charges.

At least your disaster had a happy ending. That must have been a real emotional roller-coaster.

When installing a new engine, there are so many things to hook up. A mistake or two is understandable. At least the shop in Reserve owned up to their mistake.

    1. That is why I made the offer of a credit toward a set of tires bought from him. If there had been any push back about the mistake I would not have done that and would be bad mouthing the shop; so I think we both made the right decision.

  3. Great book review. Will be looking forward to finding the series this winter when settled from traveling. We watched the series Elkhorn on Prime recently. It sent me looking ( a little) for Teddy’s true history. Need to investigate old print to count it reliable vs the sensored screen sites IMHO.

    1. Winning The West series will not provide you with anything about Teddy’s history. It is the history of America written by him. The series is good history that I never learned while in school. If you want to learn about Teddy then I recommend “Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail” and his other hunting books or his travel/adventure books. Do not select his “A Strenuous Life” which is just political campaign speeches.
