Missive #553

Kermit Roosevelt (Theodore’s son) enlisted in the British Army during World War I and served in an armored car unit in the Middle East. Later, he transferred to the American Army and commanded an artillery battery in France during the last few months of the war.I liked this book better than what his father wrote in his winning the west series. He has a few more that I will try to find and read and see if my opinion changes.

This book is his short but engrossing memoir of his war service. It’s a fascinating read. Kermit’s descriptions of the landscapes and people groups he encounters are picturesque and insightful. His accounts of the difficulties of operating primitive (by our standards) armored vehicles across rocky desert restrained vivid and exciting.

Like his dad, Kermit was a voracious reader and he is always mentioning the titles of the various classics, histories and biographies he is reading whenever he had a free moment. I don’t know if I’ve ever identified with anyone more closely than when someone at an event he attended was giving a boring speech and Kermit was surreptitiously reading a book under his table.

Kermit didn’t shy away from leading from the front and facing dangers and hardships, despite being the son of a former President. I like him a lot. — Reader review @ goodreads.com

The news. Yesterday we got soaked while on our afternoon walk. It looked like it was clearing in the southwest were I could see that it had been raining, but at almost our turn around point it started to rain. We sought shelter under a tree but the cover was not all that good and we got WET. There was also very close lightning flashes and we got pelted with small hail also while under the partial cover. It didn’t last too long and when it moved on we finished our walk.

Also in the news. I finished the second bicycling journal WordPress Page and have started the third. Maybe get those first two added to the hamburger menu within the next few days. The Javascript for the Mapbox maps is frustrating me to no end — I just don’t get it. If everything remaings the same from one page to the next I think I’ll be able to copy, paste and sunstitute but anything different and I’m lost. If it were not for ChatGPT AI assistance I would not have finished the second page.
