Missive #485

Beginning with Into the Darkness , Darkness Descending , and Through the Darkness , bestselling author Harry Turtledove (“The master of alternative history”- Publishers Weekly ) has been telling an epic the story of a world war, comparable to the terrible world wars of our own 20th century, in a world where magic works.

Imagine the drama and terror of the Second World War-only the bullets are beams of magical fire, the tanks are great lumbering beasts, and fighters and bombers are dragons raining fire upon their targets. Welcome to the world of the Derlavaian War, a world that is slowly but surely being conquered, mile by bloody mile, by the forces of the Algarvian empire … forces whose most terrible battle magics are powered by the slaughter of innocent people, the Kaunians, whom Algarve-like much of the world-holds in disdain.

In this, the fourth volume of the series which began with Into the Darkness, the war for the continent of Derlavai builds toward its crescendo as the mages of Kuusamo, aided by their former rivals from Lagoas, work desperately to create a newer form of magic that will change the course of the war. But this is really a story of ordinary people-on all sides of the conflict-forced by fate to rise to their heroic limits … or sink to the level of their darker natures. — Book promo @ goodreads.com

I went to RV City today to get the rubber glass run channels installed in Desperado’s two big side windows. Also hope they can find out what is causing my A/C to shut down. I’m reasonably sure it is the thermal switch but don’t know if it is working correctly and shutting down because the compressor if getting hot or is the switch defective. Maybe I’ll find out.

On the way to that appointment I stopped in Sierra Vista for breakfast and at the CoOp. Breakfast was at Giro Taco and I got my usual. At the CoOp I picked up my order of nondairy yogurt and tamales. On the return from RV City I stopped at my UPS Store and picked up mail which was almost all just junk but I didn’t want them to be forwarding it to me if i had to ask them to forward some ‘real’ mail later this summer.

I have a scheduled FedEx delivery of dog food today that I have no idea what is going to happen. If they do deliver my ‘home’ will not be on the Campground space. Sometimes UPS and FedEx will leave the packages at a site and sometimes they will not – I think it is a drivers decision. We will see, if it is not left I do hope they try to deliver again tomorrow.

This posting was a scheduled one. I’ll provide more, or clarifying, information as needed in the days to come.
