Missive #455

A searing, postapocalyptic novel destined to become Cormac McCarthy’s masterpiece.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. The Road by Cormac McCarthy is an awful, awful book. I have to consciously restrain myself from judging those of you who believe the book has merit. Don’t worry, the fact that I’m part of a very small minority in this regard (only the smartest 3% of my fellow Goodreads bibliophiles also gave The Road a one-star review) has not escaped me. I am nevertheless convinced of the objective correctness of my position… Edited customer review @ goodreads.comThey have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.

The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, “each the other’s world entire,” are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation. — Book promo @ goodreads.com

The problem with my Android devices not being able to select an image from FileBird folders is now in the hands of their ‘technical’ staff rather than Support. I think the purpose of Support is just to shine on the product user and make them feel good not really to fix any problem they might have. So, we will see what the ‘tech people’ come up with, I have my doubt that it is going to happen anytime soon.

Meanwhile I’m looking for alternatives. There were a couple of other file magement plugins that I have tried and did not like. Just need to keep poking about, mabe find something before FileBird gets fixed.

We have had strong winds from the south and southeast these past few days. That has filled the valley with a lot of dust from Sonora MX which has completely obscured the mountains including the Mule’ that are only 6-7 miles from the Campground. Winds blowing – it must be Spring in Cochise County.
