Missive #824

Gunfighter Nation completes Richard Slotkin’s trilogy, begun in Regeneration Through Violence and continued in Fatal Environment, on the myth of the American frontier. Slotkin examines an impressive array of sources – fiction, Hollywood westerns, and the writings of Hollywood figures and Washington leaders – to show how the racialist theory of Anglo-Saxon ascendance and superiorityThis is probably the longest book (864 pages in paperback) but is also the best of the trilogy. However, it is best that you read the three books in order. (embodied in Theodore Roosevelt’s The Winning of the West), rather than Frederick Jackson Turner’s thesis of the closing of the frontier, exerted the most influence in popular culture and government policy making in the twentieth century. He argues that Roosevelt’s view of the frontier myth provided the justification for most of America’s expansionist policies, from Roosevelt’s own Rough Riders to Kennedy’s counterinsurgency and Johnson’s war in Vietnam. — Book promo @ goodreads.com

We got to do our walk yesterday morning with only a few places on the route with standing water and it mostly mud free. With any luck there will be no more rain and we can get in another walk today. We will not tomorrow because I have a Tucson VA appointment that will take up a lot of the day. I’ll be stopping at the Sierra Vista Coop on the way back from the appointment and picking up an order of Skyr.

That order a few others have been delayed until I got back to my winter camp where I have a ‘permanent’ address. So, it is going to be Christmas in November with package delivered here almost every week.

[F]or some incomprehensible reason Democrats become extremely angry when they win. My mentions on X are overflowing with nasty, abusive comments by people who came back to my old posts to express their rage. It’s a weird psychological phenomenon that I don’t fully understand. Why people can’t be normal and feel good and magnanimous about winning is a mystery. — Clarissa’s Blog

I guess the good thing is that the riot troops have not been sent out into the streets to peacefully celebrate, burn and loot. What is more of a mystery is why the MAGA supporters have not been out there peacefully protesting, burning and looting. The ‘people’ have spoken and I hope they get what they want — get it good and hard.

Trump would emerge from military school with a blueprint for leadership by force and ridicule. You can forget Teddy Roosevelt’s “
speak softly and carry a big stick”; Trump has cited Theodore Roosevelt as a model for his own presidential person but bullying is more his style.
He has adopted Teddy’s nationalism and imperialism as the base to his MAGA campaign. He never said he would make America Great Again domestically he just let you assume that, his focus has been on maintaining America’s hegemony.
Donald Trump’s “art of the deal” is widely characterized as a strategy of bullying, intimidation, and coercion rather than traditional negotiation. Critics and former associates describe his approach as relying on threats, lawsuits, and aggressive posturing to force opponents into compliance, often followed by a retreat when met with strong resistance. This has been his approach when ‘negotiating’ as president as well. It is now well understood that any agreement with him is unreliable, in a word – he can not be trusted.

This all came to the fore during the midterm elections when President Trump was not on the ballot but he led his Republican House and Senate to defeat. His Lame Duck two years are going to prove interesting!
