Missive #601

Veteran nature writer Gene Logsdon debuts a brilliantly comic novel set in rural Minnesota in the 1950s. The novel, inspired by the author’s ten years studying in vain for the preisthood, follows the sometimes hilarious, sometimes tragic lives of a group of seminarians who realize they no longer believe the theology they are being taught, nor in the celibate life they are supposed to be leading. The author is known mostly for his books about agriculture. This is one of his few novels, but a very good one. Recommended! They resolve their problems in highly unusual ways, some tragicvally, some happily. Along the way readers encounter a rogue’s gallery of colorful and eccentric characters. In the mix there is stuff about organic farming, alcohol distillation, cowboy philososphy, baseball and alternative medicine. This is a truly original work, and it is sure to be controversial. — Book promo @ goodreads.com

I intended on staying at a Deming, NM park in May 2026 but have now made reservations for here in Elephant Butte again. Coming back here to get Desperado’s roof re-coated and a few other repairs.

The high temperature on Thursday was 58 with the low yesterday morning at 37. Today is forecast it to be about the same as will tomorrow morning. Then for the next week the highs will move up into the lower 60s but the lows will be in the mid to upper 30s. The forecast for my next camp is for highs and lows to be 1-2 degrees warmer so I think I am now in WINTER.

I have given the Librera eReader app a try but have been disappointed. I have also been disappointed with how almost every eReader handles PDFs. Therefore, it is back to ReadEra for reading PDF ebooks; which is the ‘cleanest dirty shirt’ so to speak.

Don’t know the details but a RV burned about six spaces from me last night. When I got up around midnight I saw an emergency vehicles lights but saw no flames or smelled any smoke so they had probably finished putting out the fire. Maybe get some details later today.

    1. ReadEra is an eReader app that can be downloaded to an Android tablet or a PC. On it you can read any of the common eBooks including PDFs. I like it better than Adobe Acrobat Reader which can also be downloaded to those same devices and is claimed to be the official Adobe application for Android devices. It does let you read PDFs but just seems too complicated for me; ReadEra is simpler.
