Missive #511

Finley Peter Dunne was a Chicago-based U.S. author, writer and humorist. He published Mr. Dooley in Peace and War, a collection of his nationally syndicated Mr. Dooley sketches, in 1898. The fictional Mr. Dooley expounded upon political and social issues of the day from his South Side Chicago Irish pub and he spoke with the thick verbiage and accent of an Irish immigrant. Dunne’s sly humor and political acumen won the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, a frequent target of Mr. Dooley’s barbs. Indeed Dunne’s sketches became so popular and such a litmus test of public opinion that they were read each week at White House cabinet meetings. — Book promo @ goodreads.com

“Satire in the style of Mark Twain and especially dialect humorists of the 19th century. Dunne’s Irish barkeep pontificates on matters international, national and local. His summations of world events allow Dunne to skewer the pretensions of American involvement in the Spanish-American War and make caustic comments on the world scene from golf to anarchists to the Dreyfus case. Not too much about Chicago, but enough to show that little has changed. It seems that Dunne and Mr. Dooley were the forefathers of Mike Royko and his alter ego Slats Grobnik.
There are a few racial and ethnic slurs included in Mr. Dooley’s monologues. I don’t know if these were used deliberately by Dunne to reflect his character’s largely ignorant manner of expression or if they were put in for humorous effect (like Mr. Dooley referring to the English as “Sessnachs”).” — Customer review @ goodreads.com

It not only warmed up it got HOT. The high temperature on Saturday was 96.6°F with it only 97.3 on Sunday making it the 4th dat at over 90 for the high.. The weatherguesers at weather undrground had this forecast for Sunday “Today’s temperature is forecast to be NEARLY THE SAME as yesterday” but then showed the expected high to be 89. HUH? They are staying with that upper 80s forecast for the next 10 days but I’m expecting the highs to be in the 90s. So far the A/C has been working and keeping me cool.

It’s fortunate for me that I don’t have enough friends for an intervention.
