Missive #377

After twelve gloriously scandalous Flashman novels, the incomparable George MacDonald Fraser gives us a totally hilarious tale of derring-do from a different era.

This is an entertaining book but not ‘totally hilarious’ as touted by the book promo. I liked the Flashman humor better. It’s the turn of the seventeenth century (sort of), we’re in the wild Borders of Scotland, and a casket of jewels, an accidental murder, an estate at risk and a plot to overthrow the king are the order of the day. The irresistible and feisty Lady Godiva Dacre and her “chocolate-box pretty” companion Mistress Kylie Delishe find themselves stranded on a desolate road as highway robbers threaten their lives and possessions. Seemingly out of nowhere, the dashing Bonny Gilderoy (think Johnny Depp on a horse) single-handedly defeats the villains, but not before stealing Lady Godiva’s treasured jewels—along with her heart.

After making it safely to their destination, Godiva and Kylie find themselves thrown back together with that charming scoundrel Gilderoy. A mysterious man named Archie Noble comes to their aid and also makes a play for Godiva’s affections. Despite preposterous alliances and uproarious complications of the heart, they must rely on one another as secret identities are revealed and a perilous coup endangers the Scottish throne. It is through equally daring feats of courage and outlandish costumes that our heroes wade through salacious nightlife, confront wizards and witches and endure terrifying and ridiculous odds to preserve national pride and resolve the love triangles that threaten national security.— Book promo @ goodreads.com

I went to town again yesterday. However, this time it was to Warren/Bisbee where I went to the Morning Cafe for breakfast. From there I stopped at Safeway, which is in South Bisbee, to do some grocery gathering for the week. Then continued on south to Naco AZ/Mexico for my dental appointment. This was a painless appointment where I simply got my ‘partial’ fitted. I can tell that it is going to take a little getting use to it but I have more permanent front teeth now than I have had for the past six months.

I have ordered the Starlink Mini, maybe receive it next Monday. The appointment to remove the TV antenna and patch the roof holes is set for 4 December at RV City. Sometime after that I’ll get the Mini mounted on the roof. Before that I’m hoping that I can get the Mini operational. If I can do that I’ll go to Sierra Vista again next week or the week following and tell Verizon that I no longer want to pay for their NO SERVICE.

  1. I hope the Mini works for you.I live in the middle of nowhere so have to use Experian,$1,089
a year.I hope you and Erik are enjoying the warm weather there. In NY state we will likely have snow within month.-Mary

    1. I’m also hoping that the MINI works. You might look into getting one; you can save money on the monthly charges if their plan works for you.

I’ll be getting colder weather here soon also. More warm days but cold night have started. Maybe get 1-2 snows later in the winter but it usually is gone by mid day.

  2. I never figured you would cough up the $$$ for StarLink but sometimes you surprise me.

Heck I never thought you would continue to eat breakfast once per week, just like in the good old days. Today it costs twice as much to eat, compared to pre-Covid prices.

    1. Ya need to do what ya need to do. HA

My breakfasts are now costing me about 50% more than pre COVID. But with the Social Security Cost of Living increases and the low inflation I can afford that. HA

Things have changed with internet connections for me. Verizon was the cleanest dirty shirt in the business but the past 2-3 years they have given up that position. I think they just want to sell smartphones and provide cell phone service. They have removed some of their transmitters and I think they sell most of their bandwidth to other providers.

Starlink was too expensive for me until earlier this yeaar they came out with the MINI and a $50/month plan. I can save enough on the monthly charges in a couple of years to recover the cost of the MINI and meanwhile get some internet service. I HOPE.
