22. PAYMENT IN KIND

Nasruddin’s neighbor stormed into Nasruddin’s house.

“I demand justice!” the neighbor shouted. “Just now your dog viciously attacked my wife and bit her on the foot. You’re going to have to pay!”

“Don’t worry,” Nasruddin replied calmly. “We can easily arrange payment in kind.”

“What do you mean?” asked the neighbor.

“For example, I could send my wife to your house, and your dog could bite her on the foot,” Nasruddin explained. “There is also this option: your wife could come over here and she could bite my dog on the foot. I’ll let you decide what would be best.”

Old West meets New West in this novel set in Southern California by early western writer Henry Herbert Knibbs (1874-1945). Most of the story, in fact, would happily take place in the 19th century. There is a ranch with cowboys on horses, gold prospecting in the Mojave, and a big gunfight outside a saloon. But for good measure, Knibbs also throws in a motor car, Los Angeles, and references to movie-making.

I did not like this book as well as the first one of the author’s that I read. He has some more so I’ll give him more chances. The link to the long review is worth reading. Reality meets myth in the book, as well. The title refers to its central character, a former sheriff of Abilene, now an itinerant (hobo) on the run from the law in Barstow, where he’s mistakenly believed to have killed a man. Living rough, he has his wits and plenty of grit to keep him going.

The novel’s subtitle, A Romance of the Moonstone Cañon Trail, gives a whole different impression of the book’s contents. You might guess that you’re in for some poetic renderings of landscapes and sunsets or a dew-fresh story of young lovers. You get all that, too. Early yesterday morning I received the email from Polar Support(?) shown below. It made me feel so good. Nothing has changed but I felt so good for a short time; someone has reached out to me. They feel me pain, but nothing has changed.

I got another email this morning. My account has been reinstated, a temporary password was give, I was able to open my account and change the password all on my laptop. Then tried to open Polar Flow and got the same error. Uninstalled Polar Flow, reinstalled and was then able to open it using my name and password as I had opened my account. Then tried to Pair Polar Flow with the Polar Pacer watch and failed 3-4 times. Also tried to Connect to Polar Partners e.g. Strava and had another sign in page where my name and password once again failed; the same name and password that had just opened Polar Flow. I’m not sure if I’m making any progress or just spinning my wheels.
