Missive #809

Confronting Managerialism offers a scathing critique of the influence of neoclassical economics and modern finance on business school teaching and management practice. Locke and Spender show that responsible management has given way to ‘managerialism’, whereby an elite caste of businessmen disconnected from any ethical considerations call the shots. This is a relatively short book and would have been even shorter if the joint authors had not used all the material from the references. It is written by two academics, why does it take two, for other academics written in an academic style. I don’t recommend it.

The book traces the loss of managers’ earlier social concerns, amply encouraged by management education’s transformation since the 1960’s, especially in the US. It also questions not only the social ethics of the US management caste but its management efficacy compared to systems of management that are highly employee participatory and dependent, such as in Germany and Japan.

A unique, topical and controversial look at a subject that impacts us all. — Book promo @ goodreads.com

I think I said sometime ago that ChatGPT could provide coding at an intermediate level but was not much better than myself when it came to higher level coding. I could not get what I wanted for what I was naming my Walking Man Map and have it shown in WordPress so I gave up at that time. I did not forget about it however.
I was reading something and it brought to my mind that I had not given Claude a chance to do the coding. I did that yesterday and got what I wanted with the first try. I still have a few tweaks that I need to do but think I know how to do them. But right now I have a working walking man in Draft in WordPress. The unveiling will come soon!
