101. Nasruddin Asks the Donkey

Nasruddin’s neighbor asked to borrow his donkey.

This particular neighbor had a bad temper, and Nasruddin was reluctant to refuse him.

“Let me go ask the donkey,” he said.

A few moments later, Nasruddin returned.

“My deepest apologies,” he said to his neighbor, “but the donkey refuses. He explained his reasoning like this: if I make him work for you, you are likely to beat him, and if you beat him, he will bite you, and after he bites you, you will curse me. So really, it’s better for all of us if I do not loan you the donkey.”

I have been working on another project for the past week or 10 days. What prompted me to start it was my long time desire to cut all ties with Google. I have weaned myself from most interactions with that online beast but they are still providing me with the Map APIs that I created many years ago for my old homegrown HTML blog. Recently I discovered Mapbox that offered a way out.

The project involves creating maps using Mapbox that will replace those that I have for my first bicycle tour, Grand Canyon To Mexico. This has NOT been a cut and paste effort. If I had not received a lot of help from ChatGPT I would not have accomplished what I have so far. I may have thrown in the towel and said that it was way over my pay grade and just fumed that I couldn’t do it. ChatGPT is not always right with the coding but has been around 90% or better at giving me coding that WORKED. That is far and away better than anything I could get from Mapbox’s documentation or from their AI Assistant.

It was not just Mapbox but WordPress made it difficult also with their poor documentation and their aversion to HTML coding. Code that renders a map perfectly as a HTML file will have issues in a WordPress page.

I think I have done it but have sent it out for review before adding it to my WordPress hamburger menu. Soon, then move on to the next tour or car trip where I have created Google Map APIs.

We got a good rain yesterday afternoon and into the night. The official weather underground is reporting 0.02″ but I know we got a LOT more than that. That Underground reporting station is at Rancho Grande Estates where the Adobe Cafe & Bakery is located which is about 17 miles west of my location. The way we get scattered rain is quite probable that they only got a little and we got a lot.

…individuals have  “happily carried out any order from the president in Washington under Biden,” but “got confused when Trump suddenly won” the November election. “They just don’t like Trump, they actively fought him, interfered in political life, in the US election… Trump has different ideas about what is good and what is bad, including in gender policy, in some other issues, and they don’t like it,” Putin said. — From Editorial @ RT on 2 Feb, 2025
