Missive #401

First published in 1898, ‘The Californians’ depicts life in California at the turn of the century. As California undergoes a period of rapid change and diversification, so too do the two young protagonists – the wealthy, shy Magdalena finds herself outshone at every turn by her best friend Helena as the two girls become young women. A tale about love, morals, and women’s rights in old California, this is a gripping and intriguing tale from the feminist author Gertrude Atherton. — Book promo @ Amazon

I read this book as a substitute for Golden Gate Country that is the sixth in the American Folkways series which I think was written especially for the series since the author was more of a novelist versus a non fiction writer. If you read The Californians for its history it is not a bad book; somewhat historical fiction mixed with what I think was some autobiography. I have included below the book promo for Golden Gate Country which describes what was in the book that I could not find to borrow.

Golden Gate Country is a book written by Gertrude Atherton, a renowned American author, and journalist. The book is a detailed description of the San Francisco Bay Area and its surrounding regions, also known as the Golden Gate Country. Atherton provides a comprehensive account of the history, culture, and geography of the region, covering topics such as the discovery of gold, the development of the city, and the natural beauty of the area. She also delves into the lives of the people who call the region home, including the Native Americans, the Spanish settlers, and the diverse immigrant communities that have shaped the area’s identity. The book is divided into several chapters, each focusing on a different aspect of the region. Atherton’s writing is vivid and engaging, capturing the essence of the Golden Gate Country and bringing its history and culture to life. Overall, Golden Gate Country is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the history and culture of the San Francisco Bay Area. Atherton’s writing is both informative and entertaining, making it an excellent choice for both casual readers and scholars alike. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work. — Book promo @ Amazon for an expensive ‘antiquarian’ book reprint

I don’t remember that presidential candidate Trump had anything to say about the BRIC’s de-dollarization during the run up to the election. Why now? You know who pays for a tariff? The buyer of the product on which the tariff is imposed. It will certainly reduce the amount of that product sold but will be a gold mine for smugglers. Stay tuned!

President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday [30 November 2024] threatened 100% tariffs against a bloc of nine nations if they act to undermine the U.S. dollar.

Clarissa has got this exactly right. I think euthanasia will soon become as common as abortions.

Euthanasia is an inevitable result of socialized medicine in neoliberal times. It’s easier to get rid of the unproductive than treat them. And of course, it’s all coached on the vocabulary of choice, a word that has been wielded to unleash the most inhuman practices. — by Clarissa
