Missive #129

Oryx and Crake is at once an unforgettable love story and a compelling vision of the future. Snowman, known as Jimmy before mankind was overwhelmed by a plague, is struggling to survive in a world where he may be the last human, and mourning the loss of his best friend, Crake, and the beautiful and elusive Oryx whom they both loved. This was a strange book that the author wished to have described as speculative fiction rather that dystopia or science fiction. This the first of a trilogy that I plan on reading to see what happens. In search of answers, Snowman embarks on a journey—with the help of the green-eyed Children of Crake—through the lush wilderness that was so recently a great city, until powerful corporations took mankind on an uncontrolled genetic engineering ride. Margaret Atwood projects us into a near future that is both all too familiar and beyond our imagining.” — Book promo @ goodread.com

I got my Verizon MIFI working once again. When I say it is working that means that I get 1-2 signal bars on the MIFI device when in the Park. When doing a speed test that means I’m getting 1.78 to 9.19 Mbps download and 320 Kbps to 1.19 mbps upload speeds. When I went to Reserve on Saturday I opened the MIFI and got 5 bars with speeds of 57.0 Mbps and 4.59 Mbps. Verizon claims to have coverage in the Park area but it ranges from poor to worse.

Some computer usage trivia. I have always had a difficult time doing a search when highlighting a word and then right clicking on a touchpad. I have my laptop configured for a two finger click but have been doing it all wrong by pressing rather than tapping. Now that I know what I have been doing wrong I need to remember how to do it right. I’m having a lot of problems breaking the old habits so far.

“…particularly for African Americans and Hispanic workers and veterans, you know, the workers without high school diplomas…” — President Biden

The president has been catching a lot of grief about this statement. What I find very interesting is all of the criticism that is directed toward him focuses on his disparagement of African Americans and Hispanics. It seems that what he had to say about veterans was perfectly acceptable.

  1. You read some interesting books,I likely wouldn’t read them yet will want to know your opinion of them.
I really don’t think that President Biden knows what’s going on in general,so I don’t think he realizes that he will be criticized for anything that he says .-Mary

    1. Interesting books yet you wouldn’t be likely to read them. It that because you don’t do much reading or what I read isn’t your usual genre?

In this case I think Biden is being unjustly criticized. But that makes up for all the passes he gets where he should be criticized.

      1. There are times when I read books that are novels and fiction, enjoying both.Lately though I have been reading history books and stories about long ago events..

        1. I read some straight history but most of it is written by academics which I don’t care for. I like my history as historical fiction alternative history and speculative history. I’m reading one book now online, off and on when I have an online connection. It is straight history written by a writer rather than an academic – it is good.
